Upset Stomper: Beware of neighbours who steal your pet dogs!

Laura Lau is very upset with some Singaporeans' attitude towards lost and found items, saying that the "finders keepers" mentality is wrong.She wrote to STOMP after an anxious six-day attempt to get her lost dog, Didi, back.

The Shih Tzu had had strayed out of her Pasir Ris Terrace home last Tuesday morning (10 April), when the gate to her home had malfunctioned.

What added to Laura's frustration is that the dog was found by someone living in the estate but who had kept quiet over the matter. Her heart broke when she saw the final state Didi was in (below) when compared to before she went missing (above).

Laura described how events unfolded in her email:

"On 10 April, Didi managed to stray out of the house as the gate was not functioning properly. Although I immediately conducted a search around the neighbourhood, and put up posters to alert residents to a missing 2-year-old Shih Tzu, I didn't get any news until Friday morning (13 April).

It was then that a neighbour's maid called to say she had seen Didi being taken in by another neighbour. However, she also said that Didi was to be given away that afternoon, and even had her fur haphazardly shaved off!

As such, I hurried over to the mentioned house, but only her maid was in. However, I did manage to get the home owner's number from her. It was after quite a bit of work that I finally managed to got to see this neighbour.

However, even then she did not return Didi over immediately, as she had to contact her friend about this issue. I managed to get assistance from the police, and gave her until Monday (16 Apr) to return Didi.

Eventually, I did manage to receieve Didi on Sunday night at this neighbour's house. It had been reduced to such a deplorable state that I couldn't help but cry."

Laura is grateful to the maid who alerted her to Didi's whereabouts. But she dins it hard to accept that the person in the neighbourhood who found the dog could have missed the numerous 'missing dog' posters put up in the estate. She also couldn't believe that the neighbour had even given the dog away although it wasn't hers.

i will never let you go;
